PhD Programme in Health Technologies, Bioengineering and Bioinformatics

(Formerly Research Doctorate in Bioengineering and Bioinformatics)

Ph.D. students work in research groups involved in national and international collaborations, under the supervision of faculty members, with the aim of providing the right context for a highly qualified research activity. The main goal of the graduate programme consists in the definition and accomplishment of an original and scientifically relevant research project, which will be carried out in one of the labs supporting the Ph.D., in close and continuous contact with other graduate students, post-docs and researchers.
The Ph.D. qualification is aligned with the highest international standards: students and faculty members have large and qualified scientific production departments and, thanks to the ongoing collaborations and agreements with foreign universities, students have the opportunity to undertake periods of study abroad.


Bioengineering is a highly interdisciplinary scientific area that requires the convergence of different scientific fields, ranging from engineering, and computer science to biology and medicine. The PhD program aims at training students to achieve high standard in bioengineering knowledge and skills from both the methodological and technological viewpoints. It is also designed to strengthen the students’ personal creativity, especially through the practice of scientific research in several leading sectors.

The PhD activities are led by professors and researchers belonging to groups that are very active in research at the national and international level. Research activities - which play the most important role in training - are focused on an independent research project, original and scientifically significant. Moreover, it is completely conducted within a Department Laboratory, in close and continuous contact with one of the research groups. It lasts until the end of the third year and concludes with an original thesis on a topic of relevant scientific interest. The final dissertation is aligned with the highest international standards. This is reflected by the high number of qualified scientific results and publications delivered each year by the involved Departments.

Such training is also adequate for a successful job placement in prestigious R&D laboratories, both in Italy and abroad.

Research Topics

The variety of interests and skills available in the research groups involved in the graduae programme allows a wide range of different research paths. For this reason, the Ph.D. programme covers three research areas:
  • Big data and biomedical informatics
  • Diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitative bioengineering
  • Cell and tissue Bioengineering

PhD Programme Overview

Considering the strong inter-disciplinary feature of Bio-engineering and Bio-informatics, the PhD educationalprogram provides training activities aimed both at completing the basic education and at providing advanced knowledge in several areas of significant scientific interest.

During the second year the student will improve his knowledge in the specific sector in which he/she will carry on the research activities. To this purpose, the Faculty will agree in advance with each student a training program that takes into account his/her initial skills, his/her preferences and the available expertise within the Departments involved in PhD program.

A scientific tutor is subsequently appointed, in order to supervise and direct the student in his learning process. The tutor is also responsible for proposing a detailed educational plan, coherent with research purposes as defined above. To this regard, institutional courses (both at Pavia University and other Universities) are offered to the student, as well as specialized tutorials and seminars, specifically tailored to doctoral students and well integrated with each individual learning activities.

It is strongly suggested the possibility that the student performs part of the research activities at national or international affiliated organizations or institutions that collaborate with the PhD program.

The Faculty also promotes useful initiatives to establish collaborative relationships with private companies in the sector, many of which have shown interest in the Bioengineering PhD course at the Pavia University.

Job Opportunities

The Ph.D. programme training provides access to the academic career and to relevant professions in private and public biomedical research centres, as well as in the biomedical engineering, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.
