Description: The project is aimed at enhancing the capacity of five East and Southern African universities to provide quality and carry out policy-relevant research on current trade and development issues. The partners will train university staff, students and researchers in trade development issues. The project intends to create common curricula to be integrated into study programmes and organise dialogues between the academics and the policymakers on trade and development with a focus on regional integration. The project will also offer traineeships to graduates, which will provide them with an opportunity to do policy research and be exposed to trade and development policymaking in practice. The improved capacity of universities and increased pool of experts will benefit governments and civil servants, in terms of capacity to design and negotiate trade and development policies. Ultimately this should lead to better endogenous trade and development strategies for the entire population of the East and Southern African countries.
