Italian Course for Chinese Students
ITALIAN LANGUAGE COURSE FOR CHINESE STUDENTS
The University of Pavia organises propedeutic Italian language courses for Chinese Marco Polo program students. The course length is six months and it is aimed at Chinese students who wish to enrol at the University of Pavia or at another Italian university.
COURSE PROGRAM
The students are divided in different groups according to their competence in Italian language. The weekly course load is 21 hours and the lessons take place both in the morning and in the afternoon. The courses a), b), d) and e) are taught by Italian teachers who can speak Chinese.
The student could enrol independently in the Italian course following the procedures of the Italian Embassy for foreign students who wish to study at Italian universities. The student should contact the Italian Embassy in his/her country of origin to learn the modalities of enrolment.
The courses are:
- Communication
- Contrastive Italian grammar
- Italian language and culture (history, geography, political institutions, literature, art, music)
- Pronunciation
- Academic Italian (spoken and written)
- Preparation course for the final exam
In addition to helping the Chinese students with course work, some tutors help the students to get familiar with the University of Pavia and its students (both Italian and international), the town of Pavia, and the Region of Lombardy. The students can use a language laboratory that is equipped with modern technology and has a self-study computer room where the students can use on-line software to learn Italian.
During the course the students take several written and oral exams. In the end of the course the students who have obtained a mean grade point average of at least 18 out of 30 will be admitted to the final exam that takes place in late September. The students who pass the exam will be admitted to the University of Pavia.
TEACHERS
The teachers of the course speak Chinese and have stayed in China for several years. All the teachers hold a Ph.D degree and have a long experience in teaching Italian to foreign students.
TUTORS
There are 5 tutors helping the Chinese students. The tutors are Italian last-year graduate students who help the students with the course work once a week. Furthermore, the tutors are responsible for cultural activities of the Chinese students both and the university and outside the university.
HOUSING
Chinese students can rent private apartments in Pavia.

The average accommodation cost is about 250/300€ per month.
UNIVERSITY STUDIES
The Chinese students who pass the Italian language exam in Pavia in July can enrol at the pre-selected course of studies. The Chinese students take courses at the University of Pavia along with the Italian students and graduate at the end of their studies.

ACTIVITIES WITH ITALIAN STUDENTS
The tutors organize some activities to help the Chinese students to integrate in the academic community.
There is be a language exchange activity called Tandem. The Italian students that study Chinese meet with the Chinese students in a casual context.
