As part of the effort to strengthen relations between Italy and China, the Marco Polo Program was created (planned and developed by CRUI upon request of the President of Italy) to increase the presence of Chinese students in Italian Universities. The University of Pavia organized a six-month propedeutic course in Italian language (March-September 2007). The course allows the Chinese students to acquire sufficient cultural and linguistic competence in order to follow regular university courses.





The Italian course started on March 26 and will finish on September 21, 2007 when the final exam will be taken. We have 43 students divided into two classes. Each student follows 520 hours of teaching as follows:

• Course in communication (translation) to learn everyday communication (250 hrs)
• Course in academic spoken and written Italian to learn to speak and write about abstract topics in a formal context per (80 hrs)
• Course in phonetics to learn correct pronunciation in Italian (80 hrs)
• Course in exam preparation to learn how to face the Italian language test (50 hrs)
• Course in Italian grammar to learn formal aspects of grammar in comparison to Chinese grammar (30 hrs)
• Course in Italian culture, to learn about different aspects of Italian life: history, geography, art, institutions, religion, music and literature (30 hrs)

The University of Pavia Language Centre offers its language laboratories with their audio and visual equipment both for exercises in phonetics as well as self-learning.




The teachers of the course speak Chinese and have spent several years in China. Furthermore, all the teachers hold a Ph.D degree and have extensive experience in teaching Italian to foreigners.

There are 5 tutors assigned to the Chinese students. The tutors are Italian undergraduate university students in their final year of studies. They meet the Chinese students once a week and help them with the coursework.
Furthermore, the tutors organize cultural activities for the Chinese students both at the university and outside the university.

The monthly cost of an apartment was about €250 per person.




The Chinese students who pass the Italian language exam in Pavia in September 2007 can enrol in the Degree Course that they have selected. The Chinese students will follow and complete the course along with Italian students.

The tutors also organize parties and happy hours to help the Chinese students get to know Italian students.
In addition, there is a Tandem activity with Italian students studying Chinese engage in conversation with Chinese students (some Chinese and some Italian) to improve their language skills.
