The Alessandro Volta Doctorate School in Science and Technology groups six scientific PhD courses: Chemistry, Earth Science, Experimental ecology and geobotany, Mathematics and statistics, Pharmaceutical chemistry and technology, Physics. The primary aim of the specific PhDs and thus of the whole school is to provide highly qualified researchers who will be able to work in the University as well as in public and private research bodies and industrial research institutes.
The PhDs training activities highlight, although in different ways, the cultural unity of the different scientific disciplines on a wide range of internationally relevant research themes.
For the first year, all PhDs schedule an intense teaching activity, which can be completed by the end of the 1st semester of the second year; the following 18 months are dedicated to the research and the drafting of the final thesis. The training activities can be of different kind depending on the specific PhD: reading courses tought by the students themselves, seminars, conventions, laboratory activity are scheduled. Students are highly encouraged to spend a training period abroad.
Some PhDs have been created to match their training activities with other similar PhD programmes. The PhD in Mathematics and Statistics, for example, coordinates its activities with other PhDs of Milano-Politecnico, Milano-Statale e Milano-Bicocca and every year common courses are activated, in order to optimize the teaching resources and provide the students with the widest choice of topics.
The PhD in Experimental Ecology and Geobotany will have the opportunity to integrate its lectures with the ones scheduled for the brand new Mares Marine Ecosystem Health and Conservation doctorate school (http://www.mares-eu.org), financed within the Erasmus Mundus european programme (Rif: 512002-1-2010-1-BE-ERA MUNDUS-EMJD). The University of Pavia is involved as full partner in the Mares school with the aim of realizing three international PhD programmes thanks to the co-tutelle tool, and to offer two summer courses under the "Transferable skill training courses" and "Expert training categories.
The PhD in Physics is characterized by an international approach since the academic year 2000/2001, thanks to specific agreements with many European and American Universities (e.g. Berkeley, Santa Barbara, Stony Brook, Marsiglia, etc.) which promote the exchange of professors and PhD students as well as the issuing of an International Certificate of Doctoral Studies (ICDS).
The PhD in Earth science has been the first in Pavia to adopt the Executive PhD model, already existing in some other Italian Universities, thanks to the cooperation with Assolombarda and Edison Spa Milano.
Finally, since many years the School publishes Scientifica Acta, a six-month review collecting the long abstracts of the Schools PhD thesis. Since 2009, the review is available online at the following website: http://riviste.paviauniversitypress.it/index.php/sa
